Looking for a landscape gardener is a long process. You have to do quite a bit of research and ask around a lot before you find someone suitable. But your work is not done just yet. You have to be sure that the landscaper is the best for you. The best way to do this is by talking to him. It would help the conversation flow more productively if you had some questions ready.
But what kind of questions does one ask a landscaper? There is actually a lot that you would want to know before you hire him. However, it is not possible to get to discover absolutely everything in just a couple of meetings. So the key is to design a set of questions about the things that are most pertinent to you.
Since most people are unsure of what questions to ask, our landscapers have compiled a list to guide you. It’s not an exhaustive one. Just something to give you a general idea of what the professionals feel is important to know before making a decision.
Questions to Ask a Landscape Gardener
Can I get a quotation?
For the average person, the all important question is usually about the cost. This can vary greatly depending on the landscaper’s reputation, qualification, and resume. Do not take for granted that the rates will be around the same as the last landscaper you spoke to. Make sure to specifically ask for a quotation for the work that you want done.
How long will the project take?
The landscaper should be able to give you an estimate about how many days or weeks he will require to complete the job so that you can plan your life accordingly. Also ask if there will be a discount in case he does not finish in time.
What are your qualifications?
From a professional’s point of view, this is actually the most important questions you can ask a landscape gardener. The reason is that many people start landscaping as a side or hobby business, not really trained or equipped to handle the myriad tasks associated with landscaping. It is thus crucial to have relevant qualifications, or at least extensive experience.
Do you have any references?
Even someone with qualifications may not be very good at his job. It’s important to see first-hand what the landscaper is capable of. Don’t be shy to ask for references and do a thorough check before making the hire.
At this point, the answers you may have received will have already led you to make up your mind to some extent about whether or not you want to hire this person. Now, there will be some issues that are of interest only to you, such as if he will use organic manure and seeds, if he will set up a vegetable garden, or if he is adept at installing water features.
